After their relaxed dinner together, they ordered another beer and continued talking. Finally, they decided to head for Royce’s apartment. Adrienne followed Royce to the building parking garage and parked in the visitor slot. As they entered the lobby, Adrienne paused to admire the garden room. “That really is a pretty place to sit, isn’t it?”

“Sure is. Want to sit there for a while before we head upstairs?” Royce loved sitting in the garden room, finding it relaxing and peaceful. Sometimes very late at night, or very early in the morning, she would leave her apartment and sit in the garden room, contemplating. Usually at that late hour she had it all to herself.

Now, early in the evening, the seats were nearly all taken, but they found a small table close to the glass wall with a view outside. They spent a little time people-watching the folks arriving home from work. Adrienne got them each a cup of coffee, and they enjoyed the quiet time together. Like most long-time friendships, theirs was such that they didn’t have to talk all the time. The silences were as comfortable as the conversations.

At the same time, they saw Stephanie and an older woman enter the lobby from the parking garage. Stephanie glanced casually around as she and the woman headed for the elevator. She recognized Royce and Adrienne and waved. She then spoke to the other woman and they walked over to where Royce and Adrienne were seated.

Royce and Adrienne both rose politely as Stephanie made introductions. “Royce, Adrienne, this is my mom, Claire.”

Claire was as attractive as Stephanie, but in a more mature way. She smiled a broad, warm smile and shook hands with the two of them. “Royce,” she said, when she shook hands with her. “What a pretty name.”

Royce smiled and blushed a little. “Would you two care to join us?” As she spoke, Adrienne was already rounding up two more chairs.

As the four sat down, Royce led the conversation. Claire was obviously taken with her. “So, what do you do, Royce?” Royce explained her position at the hospital, and Claire immediately asked, “Do you know my niece, Eleanor Stone?”

“No, not personally, but I do know who she is.” Royce decided she really needed to meet this Doctor Stone, sometime. She and Stephanie exchanged a smile.

“Mom, Royce is going to take pictures at the reunion for us,” Stephanie threw in.

“Oh, really? So, you dabble in photography as well, Royce? My goodness, you are a woman of many talents.”

“You have no idea,” Adrienne interjected, whereupon Royce blushed furiously, and Stephanie laughed lightly, but Claire just looked perplexed.

“Well!” Claire finally said. “And what do you do, Adrienne?” As the two of them chatted, Royce sat back and watched with interest, as Stephanie had been doing.

Stephanie had noticed how much her mother enjoyed Royce’s company. Runs in the family I guess, she mused to herself.

As Clarie began to comment on the beauty of the healthy plants throughout the room, Stephanie noticed Royce’s eyes widen as she glanced into the lobby.
